Duke Pearson – Wahoo! – 180 Gram Vinyl Record

Wahoo! is one of Duke Pearson’s clearest statements as pianist, composer, and arranger. Recorded in November 1964, the sextet features Donald Byrd on trumpet, James Spaulding on alto saxophone and flute, Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums. Pearson writes for the three horns with orchestral awareness, using voicing and contrast to make the ensemble sound larger without sacrificing the flexibility of a small jazz group.

“Amanda,” written for Pearson’s niece, opens with a graceful melody and a relaxed swing. Byrd’s bright trumpet, Spaulding’s lighter alto, and Henderson’s darker tenor create three distinct layers. “Bedouin,” a piece by Byrd, introduces an exotic minor-key atmosphere, while “Farewell Machelle” shows Pearson’s gift for ballad writing. His piano remains economical, shaping the music through touch and placement rather than dominating his own arrangements.

The title track begins the second side with a memorable figure and a more forceful ensemble attack. Pearson leaves strategic spaces in the chart, allowing the soloists to emerge naturally from the written passages. “ESP,” composed by Spaulding, is tauter and more angular, reflecting the exploratory direction Blue Note was taking in the mid-1960s. Byrd’s “Fly Little Bird Fly” closes with an uplifting line and fluent hard-bop motion.

Joe Henderson is especially effective in this setting because his oblique phrasing brings tension to Pearson’s polished structures. Spaulding moves comfortably between lyrical and sharper ideas, and Byrd supplies authority without overpowering the blend. Cranshaw and Roker keep the changing moods connected, giving the arranged horn figures a firm rhythmic base and the solo sections enough room to breathe.

This 180-gram Blue Note vinyl edition presents the complete original six-track stereo album. UPC 602465103724 identifies this pressing. The single-LP sequence preserves Pearson’s intended balance of originals and contributions from Byrd and Spaulding, making Wahoo! a concise demonstration of his ability to unite composition, arrangement, and improvisation.

Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
