This Is Music: The Singles follows The Verve across several distinct lives: the early group built on Nick McCabe’s expansive guitar sound, the mid-1990s band moving toward Richard Ashcroft’s more direct songwriting, the enormous Urban Hymns period, and the 2008 reunion. The collection is not a simple greatest-hits disc arranged only by popularity. Its sequence places psychedelic scale, bruised ballads, and anthemic rock beside one another to show how much the band’s identity changed without losing its central tension.

The title track and “Slide Away” represent the force of A Storm in Heaven and the band’s early singles. “She’s a Superstar” appears in its full-length original form, allowing McCabe’s guitar textures and the rhythm section’s patient build to unfold beyond the shorter edit used on the 2004 compilation. “History” and “On Your Own” bring the focus toward Ashcroft’s voice and the more fractured emotional world of A Northern Soul.

The Urban Hymns songs form the collection’s best-known center. “Lucky Man,” “Sonnet,” “The Drugs Don’t Work,” and “Bitter Sweet Symphony” combine orchestral color and broad melodies with lyrics that remain unusually vulnerable for stadium-sized songs. “Bitter Sweet Symphony” may dominate the public memory, but the quieter pacing of “Sonnet” and “The Drugs Don’t Work” gives the sequence its emotional depth.

Earlier singles “Blue,” “All in the Mind,” and “Gravity Grave” preserve the exploratory side that preceded that success. For this anniversary edition, “Love Is Noise” and “Rather Be” replace the two non-single bonus tracks from the original 2004 CD. Those Forth-era recordings extend the story into the reunion and give the collection a more accurate singles-based conclusion.

This Virgin Records 20th-anniversary edition presents 14 tracks across two vinyl records. UPC 602465803587 identifies this 2024 configuration. It is the first vinyl release of the compilation and includes the full version of “She’s a Superstar” plus both 2008 reunion singles, making its program distinct from the earlier compact disc.
