XClan – Xodus: The New Testament, released in 1992, is the second studio album by the Afrocentric, politically charged hip-hop group XClan, and it serves as a powerful follow-up to their influential debut, To the East, Blackwards (1990). While their first album introduced listeners to their blend of militant Black nationalism, spirituality, funk-heavy production, and rich cultural symbolism, Xodus takes that formula and deepens it, delivering a bold, uncompromising statement of Black pride, resistance, and identity during the height of the golden age of hip-hop.
Led by the commanding voice of Brother J, with production from Professor X, Paradise the Architect, and Sugar Shaft, Xodus is built on a foundation of thick funk grooves, soul samples, and Parliament-Funkadelic-style soundscapes. The beats are dense and hypnotic, pulling from deep crates of classic Black music while infusing it with a new urgency. But as always with XClan, the music is in service to the message—a message steeped in Pan-Africanism, ancient Egyptian mysticism, Five Percent Nation ideology, and revolutionary rhetoric.
Xodus continues XClan’s mission of raising consciousness through coded language, historical references, and poetic intensity. Tracks like “F.T.P. (Free the Prisoners)” directly confront systemic racism and mass incarceration, while “Xodus” and “The Calling” frame the group’s mission in spiritual and mythological terms. Brother J acts less like a rapper and more like a teacher or griot, dropping knowledge with authority and rhythm, often using metaphor and allegory to connect ancient African legacies with contemporary Black struggles.
Songs such as “A.D.A.M.” (Another Dead African Man) are deeply emotional and searing in their political critique, speaking to the trauma of police violence and institutional neglect. Meanwhile, “Fire & Earth” and “Funky 4 You” show that XClan can balance their seriousness with charisma and groove, never letting the weight of their subject matter drag down the musicality of the record. The inclusion of skits and interludes, like “Interrogation”, adds a dramatic, almost theatrical layer to the listening experience, emphasizing the album’s role as a conceptual journey—a new “testament” of Black resistance and pride.
Although Xodus didn’t reach the same commercial heights as some of its more radio-friendly contemporaries, its artistic ambition and cultural depth solidified XClan’s place in the canon of political hip-hop, alongside peers like Public Enemy, Poor Righteous Teachers, Brand Nubian, and KRS-One. The album’s unapologetic Afrocentricity, layered symbolism, and refusal to pander to mainstream expectations made it a cult favorite among listeners seeking hip-hop with substance, purpose, and spiritual fire.
