Ghost – Phantomine – Vinyl Record
Ghost’s Phantomime is a compelling EP released on May 19, 2023, by the Swedish rock band Ghost. This collection features five cover songs, each reimagined with Ghost’s distinctive blend of theatrical hard rock and gothic flair. The EP serves as a homage to the band’s diverse musical influences, spanning genres from post-punk to heavy metal and pop.
Track Listing:
“See No Evil” – Originally by Television
“Jesus He Knows Me” – Originally by Genesis
“Hanging Around” – Originally by The Stranglers
“Phantom of the Opera” – Originally by Iron Maiden
“We Don’t Need Another Hero” – Originally by Tina Turner
Each track is transformed through Ghost’s lens, infusing them with their signature sound while respecting the essence of the originals. For instance, their rendition of Genesis’s “Jesus He Knows Me” was released as the EP’s first single on April 9, 2023, coinciding with Easter Sunday, highlighting the song’s enduring relevance. The second single, a cover of Iron Maiden’s “Phantom of the Opera,” followed on May 16, 2023, showcasing the band’s ability to tackle complex metal compositions with finesse.
Frontman Tobias Forge initially envisioned Phantomime as a full-length album comprising ten cover tracks, intended to mirror the band’s previous album, Impera (2022). However, the profound impact of Impera led to a more concise EP format. Forge began recording demos for Phantomime alongside those for Impera, with plans to cover songs by Motörhead, Misfits, and U2, and even recorded a demo for Rush’s “Distant Early Warning.” He noted that contemporary political figures, including Donald Trump, influenced the EP’s conceptual direction.
Upon its release, Phantomime achieved commercial success, spending a week at number 8 on the UK album charts and reaching number 1 on both the Swedish Albums and Swedish Hard Rock Albums charts.
