Girlpool – Powerplant – Limited Edition Colored Vinyl Record
Released on May 12, 2017, Powerplant is the second studio album by Girlpool, the Los Angeles-based indie rock duo consisting of Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad. The album marked a significant evolution in their sound, as it was the first to feature live drums, played by drummer Miles Wintner, adding a new layer of depth and intensity to their once minimalist, vocal-and-guitar-driven music. While their debut album, Before the World Was Big (2015), focused on bare-bones, lo-fi songwriting with tight harmonies and introspective lyrics, Powerplant embraces a fuller, more dynamic sound, incorporating elements of shoegaze, grunge, and dream pop while maintaining the duo’s intimate, deeply personal songwriting.
Musically, Powerplant balances soft, melancholic melodies with moments of explosive distortion, reminiscent of ’90s indie and alt-rock bands like The Breeders, Elliott Smith, and Yo La Tengo. Songs like “123” and “It Gets More Blue” highlight Girlpool’s signature harmonized vocals, but now against layered guitars and rich textures, giving their songs a more cinematic, immersive feel. Tracks like “Corner Store” and “Soup” showcase their ability to shift from gentle vulnerability to raw, cathartic noise, a contrast that makes Powerplant both emotionally gripping and musically unpredictable. Lyrically, the album explores coming-of-age anxieties, self-doubt, and fleeting moments of connection, delivered with poetic ambiguity and an aching sense of nostalgia.
Upon its release, Powerplant received critical acclaim, with many praising its growth in sound, emotional depth, and seamless blend of softness and intensity. While Girlpool had already made a name for themselves in the indie scene, this album cemented them as one of the most unique and evocative acts in modern indie rock. Powerplant remains a beautiful, bittersweet album that captures the tension between youthful uncertainty and the weight of growing up, making it a standout record of the 2010s indie scene.
