Hank Mobley – Curtain Call – 180 Gram Tone Poet Vinyl Record
Curtain Call was recorded in August 1957 but remained unreleased for decades, making it one of the important Blue Note sessions recovered from the vault. Hank Mobley leads trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Jimmy Rowser, and drummer Art Taylor through a relaxed but carefully written hard-bop program.
“Don’t Get Too Hip” opens with a conversational theme suited to Mobley’s understated tenor style. Dorham’s trumpet provides a brighter edge, and Clark’s piano solo combines blues phrasing with precise rhythmic placement. The title track follows with a longer form and a more reflective atmosphere.
The standard “Deep in a Dream” gives Mobley room to emphasize breath, tone, and melodic patience. His ballad playing avoids excess sentiment, while Clark and Rowser create a quiet foundation that keeps the performance moving.
“The Mobe” returns to a blues-centered original, and “My Reverie” adapts a familiar melody to the quintet’s cool balance. “On the Bright Side” closes with a buoyant line and crisp exchanges among the horns and rhythm section.
This Tone Poet edition presents the complete six-track session on 180-gram vinyl, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog tapes and housed in a deluxe gatefold jacket. It turns a once-obscure vault date into a fully realized part of Mobley’s Blue Note catalog.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
