Description

Horace Silver – Song for My Father – 180 Gram Blue Vinyl Record

Song for My Father is Horace Silver’s most widely recognized album and one of Blue Note’s defining hard-bop recordings. Its sessions span late 1963 and 1964, with Silver leading two versions of his quintet. Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook appear on part of the program, while the newer lineup introduces Joe Henderson and Carmell Jones. Teddy Smith, Gene Taylor, Roger Humphries, and Roy Brooks complete the rhythm sections.

The title composition draws on Silver’s Cape Verdean family background and a Brazilian bossa-nova pulse. Its opening bass figure and descending horn theme are instantly recognizable, but the performance remains deeper than its hook. Henderson’s tenor moves between dry economy and rising intensity, while Silver’s piano uses clipped chords and blues responses to keep the groove alive beneath every solo.

“The Natives Are Restless Tonight” pushes the quintet into a more urgent minor-key setting. “Calcutta Cutie” adds another cross-cultural rhythmic color, reflecting Silver’s ability to absorb influences without turning them into decoration. “Que Pasa” returns to a spacious Latin feel, using repetition and silence to create an atmosphere that is both relaxed and slightly mysterious.

Joe Henderson’s “The Kicker” brings a harder, more angular line, and the band responds with force. “Lonely Woman,” Silver’s own composition rather than the Ornette Coleman piece, closes the original album with a measured ballad performance. The sequence demonstrates why Silver’s writing was so influential: themes are memorable, rhythms are immediately felt, and every structure leaves room for individual improvisers.

This edition presses the original six-track album on 180-gram blue vinyl. UPC 602465117325 identifies the colored pressing, separating it from standard black-vinyl reissues and expanded compact discs. It retains the classic Reid Miles cover with Silver’s father pictured on the front and preserves the original single-LP sequence.

Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
