Gloom Division (stylized in all caps) is the second studio album by American indie-pop solo project I Don’t Know How But They Found Me, fronted solely by Dallon Weekes after the departure of drummer Ryan Seaman. It was released on February 23, 2024, through Concord Records and was co-produced by Weekes alongside longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann, known for his work with The Flaming Lips and MGMT. Clocking in at 39 minutes and 21 seconds across twelve tracks, the album finds Weekes further refining the darkly melodic art-pop and post-punk ethos of his debut Razzmatazz, now infused with R&B grooves and glam-rock flair.
The writing and recording sessions for Gloom Division took place between November 2022 and January 2023 at Tarbox Road Studios, where Fridmann’s signature dense, textural production melded with Weekes’s penchant for catchy, theatrical songwriting. Drawing inspiration from ’70s glam rock, ’90s R&B, and Weekes’s own experiences with neurodivergence, the album balances introspective lyrics—often touched by themes of identity and escape—with buoyant, dance-inflected arrangements. This record marks the project’s first full-length outing as a solo endeavor, following the exit of Seaman and signaling a more personal direction in Weekes’s music.
Gloom Division traverses a broad sonic landscape: shimmering synth arpeggios and chugging post-punk guitars underpin tracks like “What Love?”, while the slinky R&B swagger of “Infatuation” and the propulsive art-pop bounce of “Gloomtown Brats” showcase Weekes’s versatility as both a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. The penultimate track, “A Letter,” offers a personal touch—revisiting a song Weekes originally wrote for his earlier band The Brobecks—while closer “Downside” brings the album full circle with its yearning chorus and layered harmonies.
Gloom Division received generally favorable reviews. Critics praised its blend of dark lyrical themes with upbeat melodies and lauded Weekes’s evolution as a songwriter unafraid to merge disparate genres into a cohesive whole. Publications such as The Indiependent highlighted the album’s maturity compared to Razzmatazz, and outlets like Rolling Stone and Kerrang! awarded it ratings of 4/5 or higher, commending the infectious hooks and stylistic experimentation throughout the record
To support Gloom Division, Weekes announced the Gloomtown Tour, which launched March 15, 2024, across North America before moving on to a European leg in June and July. The tour lineup saw Weekes joined by guitarist Anthony Purpura, bassist Isaac Paul, and drummer Ronnie Strauss, bringing the album’s colorful arrangements to life on stage.
