Mordechai is the third studio album by Khruangbin, released on June 26, 2020, through Dead Oceans, in association with Night Time Stories. The album marks a significant shift in the band’s sound, featuring more prominent vocals while maintaining their signature blend of psychedelic, funk, soul, dub, and world music influences.
Khruangbin, a Texas-based trio consisting of Laura Lee (bass, vocals), Mark Speer (guitar, vocals), and Donald “DJ” Johnson (drums, vocals), is known for its eclectic fusion of genres, drawing inspiration from global sounds, particularly Thai funk, Middle Eastern grooves, and African rhythms.
Unlike their mostly instrumental past releases (The Universe Smiles Upon You and Con Todo El Mundo), Mordechai introduces vocals on nearly every track, marking a new direction for the band. The album retains their dreamy, reverb-soaked guitar work, groovy basslines, and laid-back percussion while incorporating multilingual lyrics and more structured song forms.
Mordechai received positive reviews, with critics praising the band’s expansion into vocal-driven songs while still retaining their signature groove-based, multicultural sound. The album performed well commercially, peaking at #31 on the Billboard 200 and gaining recognition in indie and global music
