For a brief moment during the 1980s, Canada held the rare distinction of being the industrial center of North America. No, not in terms of chemical plants or steel mills, but due to the preponderance of its keepers of the electronic body movement flame. Progeny of fellow Vancouver pioneers Skinny Puppy, Manufacture’s two records revealed a band who knew how to put its mouth where its sequencers were.
Rather than relying on the visceral surfaces of folks like Front Line Assembly, Manufacture took their cue from the likes of Moev as much as from the Pups. In fact, ‘As the End Draws Near’ could almost be mid-1980s Moev crossed with Chris and Cosey, as sparkling, crystalline synths and sequencers keep up a sprightly bit below cooing female vocals. Manufacture’s politics didn’t bury itself under the machines; the title track’s menacing industrial pulse and discreet TV samples revealed the corrupt medium behind the message.
