Mitski – The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We – Vinyl Record
A choir enters early in The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, widening the frame around Mitski's voice without removing its intimacy. That relationship between a solitary singer and a larger musical setting gives her seventh album much of its character. Released by Dead Oceans in September 2023, the eleven-song record draws on country, folk, and orchestral pop while retaining the abrupt changes and precise writing associated with her work. Its arrangements can suggest a broad American landscape, but the songs keep returning to private experiences of love, memory, distance, and uncertainty. This vinyl LP contains the complete original album sequence.
Longtime collaborator Patrick Hyland produced the record, with recording taking place at the Bomb Shelter in Nashville and Sunset Sound in Los Angeles. Drew Erickson arranged and conducted the orchestra, while Mitski arranged a seventeen-person choir drawn from singers in both cities. Those contributions enlarge the available sound, but the album does not use every resource at once. A voice can remain almost exposed before a choral entrance or an instrumental swell changes the dimensions of a song. The contrast gives the ensemble passages a purpose: they make the scale of an individual feeling audible while allowing the smaller details of the performance to remain clear.
“Bug Like an Angel” introduces that approach through an understated guitar-led setting and sudden communal vocal passages. “Buffalo Replaced” adds a firmer pulse, while “Heaven” turns toward a gentler, country-tinged atmosphere. The first side moves between these different spaces without losing the sense of a single, recognizable voice guiding the record. “I Don't Like My Mind” places a direct vocal performance at the center of a concise song, and “The Deal” builds toward a more forceful ending. The album makes effective use of these changes in size. Some songs stay close to the listener; others briefly open into a much less contained sound.
The second side begins with “When Memories Snow” before arriving at “My Love Mine All Mine,” whose measured pace and spare presentation give it a distinct place in the program. “The Frost” and “Star” continue the record's movement between familiar song forms and more atmospheric arrangements. Mitski's delivery is crucial to those transitions. Small changes in emphasis can make a simple phrase feel tentative, resolved, or distant, without requiring a large production change around it. The orchestra and choir add color and scale, but they do not replace the vocal as the point of connection. The songs remain compact even when their arrangements reach outward.
“I'm Your Man” and “I Love Me After You” complete an album that often sets tenderness alongside unease. Its country and orchestral elements give it a different surface from the electronic textures of Laurel Hell, yet the concentrated writing and carefully judged shifts in intensity remain consistent with Mitski's earlier work. The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We rewards attention to both parts of that balance: the recognizable forms that make the songs approachable, and the details that make them slightly unsettled. This Dead Oceans LP includes all eleven selections across two sides, beginning with “Bug Like an Angel” and ending with “I Love Me After You.”
