Oh Pep! – Stadium Cake – Double Vinyl Record
Released on June 24, 2016, Stadium Cake is the debut studio album by Australian folk-pop duo Oh Pep!, comprising Olivia Hally and Pepita Emmerichs. The album showcases the duo’s evolution from their earlier folk roots to a more expansive pop sound, blending intricate instrumentation with insightful lyrics.
Hally and Emmerichs met in 2009 at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School in Melbourne and began collaborating musically. Prior to Stadium Cake, they released three EPs: Oh Pep! (2012), II (2013), and Living (2015). For this album, they aimed to explore new musical styles, incorporating pop and rock influences. The recording took place in Nova Scotia, Canada, marking their first experience working in a multi-track studio environment.
Stadium Cake represents a departure from Oh Pep!’s earlier acoustic-driven sound, embracing a fuller, more electrified pop aesthetic. The album features a mix of upbeat tracks and introspective ballads, characterized by catchy melodies, tight harmonies, and thoughtful songwriting. Themes explored include personal growth, relationships, and self-discovery.
Stadium Cake received favorable reviews from music critics. Bob Boilen of NPR Music praised the album for its intricate and detailed compositions, highlighting the duo’s talents as both performers and listeners. Bryan Hood of The Village Voice described it as an engaging folk-pop debut, suitable for fans of the genre. Doug Wallen of Rolling Stone Australia noted that the album’s best moments retain the duo’s folky intimacy while expanding their sound, particularly praising the track “Doctor Doctor” for its pop sensibilities.
