I’m Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town stretches blues phrasing across a big-band frame, Stompin’ Room Only is lean and propulsive, and Mister C uses the ensemble like a set of sharply cut colors. Strike Up the Band and Birth of the Blues close the program by connecting show-song material to the album’s harder rhythmic vocabulary without smoothing away its character.
