Robben Ford – The Inside Story – 180 Gram Gold Vinyl Record

The Inside Story catches Robben Ford at a meeting point between blues, jazz, and the rhythmically precise fusion of the late 1970s. Released in 1979 and produced by Steve Cropper, the album gives his guitar eight songs with enough room for melody, rhythmic interplay, and expressive phrasing. Ford's blues background remains audible, but the setting is broader than a conventional blues session. Keyboards, bass, and drums contribute to arrangements that can move from a relaxed melodic passage into a tightly played groove, with the band treating those changes as part of the same musical conversation.

That band is especially important in the album's history. Keyboardist Russell Ferrante, bassist Jimmy Haslip, and drummer Ricky Lawson would go on to form the original core of Yellowjackets. Their work here already shows the rapport that made that next step possible. Ferrante's harmonic support gives Ford more than a backdrop, while Haslip and Lawson can make an intricate passage feel settled rather than fussy. The result is a guitar-led album whose interest does not stop at the lead instrument. Listening to the ensemble is part of hearing why these sessions became a starting point for another long-running group.

Cropper's involvement brings another useful connection into the picture. His own musical history was rooted in Stax and in an understanding of how guitar can serve a song, an appropriate perspective for Ford's combination of technical range and blues feeling. The Inside Story leaves space for both. A strong melody can remain the main subject even when the playing becomes harmonically involved, and a rhythmic figure can do more than provide a platform for a solo. That balance helps explain why the album works for listeners interested in songs and grooves as well as those following the finer details of Ford's guitar technique.

Magic Sam, There's No One Else, and Tee Time for Eric bring the album's funkier side into focus. North Carolina and Need Somebody make its blues connection more apparent, while For the One I Love gives the program another melodic character. The title track and Far Away complete a set that moves between related styles without requiring the musicians to abandon their shared sound. Ford's phrasing connects the pieces, but the rhythm section and keyboards help each one take its own shape. The changes in feel are a useful reminder of how wide his musical interests already were at this stage.

For listeners who know Ford chiefly through his later blues records, The Inside Story offers an earlier view of his playing in a particularly strong ensemble. For Yellowjackets followers, it documents the partnership before that band began releasing albums under its own name. Those histories make the record worth investigating, but the performances supply the reason to stay with it. Ford, Ferrante, Haslip, and Lawson give the eight-song program a combination of precision and ease that suits its mixture of blues, funk, and jazz. It is a revealing chapter in Ford's catalog, with the beginnings of another band's identity audible beside his own.
