Currents is Tame Impala's third studio album and the record on which Kevin Parker placed synthesizers, drum programming, and tightly constructed pop arrangements at the center of the project. Written, performed, recorded, produced, and mixed by Parker, the album turns personal change into sound: older patterns stretch, dissolve, and return in altered form. Its polished production is filled with small disruptions, from heavily processed drums to vocals that seem to move between intimate confession and an interior monologue heard through a wall.
“Let It Happen” opens with nearly eight minutes of surrender and resistance. Repeating sections appear to malfunction before resolving into another groove, making the arrangement enact the difficult acceptance described in the lyric. “Nangs” works as a brief transition, and “The Moment” considers the instant when delaying a decision is no longer possible. “Yes I'm Changing” follows with unusual calm, acknowledging that growth can separate people even when neither person's past experience was false. The first side establishes change as loss and opportunity together.
“Eventually” turns a breakup into a promise that pain will lessen later, while the short “Gossip” clears space before “The Less I Know the Better.” The latter's instantly recognizable bass figure supports a story of jealousy and unwanted knowledge. Its accessibility helped bring Tame Impala to a wider audience, but the clean hook is surrounded by emotional avoidance. “Past Life” then filters recollection through spoken narration and electronic treatment, showing how one ordinary sight can reactivate a relationship the narrator believed had been contained.
“Disciples” compresses attraction and distance into less than two minutes. “'Cause I'm a Man” examines weakness through a refrain that can sound like confession and excuse at the same time, refusing to make self-awareness identical with repair. “Reality in Motion” accelerates as possibility becomes action, and “Love/Paranoia” studies the suspicion that intimacy can create. Parker's production joins psychedelic depth with clear pop architecture, allowing echoes and phasing to serve the songs instead of functioning only as retro studio effects.
“New Person, Same Old Mistakes” closes the album by asking whether reinvention can escape the behavior that made it necessary. The title captures Currents' central tension: movement is real, but traces of the earlier self continue underneath. Across thirteen tracks, Parker connects relationship change with artistic change. The album's electronic and R&B-informed textures represented a notable shift from the guitar-dominant psychedelia of Innerspeaker and Lonerism, yet the detailed solo-studio method and fascination with altered perception remain recognizable.
