Released in 1990, Love with the Proper Stranger is the debut album by The Aquanettas, an American rock band known for their fusion of classic rock influences and distinctive female vocals. The Aquanettas was an all-girl rock band from New York. Their music was influenced by classic rock such as Led Zeppelin and punk bands such as X, mixed with surf rock overtones. They formed in the mid-1980s in New York City, New York with lead vocalist Deborah Schwartz who had previously sung and wrote music for punk band Flavor Crystals. Jill Richmond from Los Angeles, California joined Schwartz to form the nucleus of the band, with bassist Claudine Troise and drummer Stephanie Seymour.
The band took their name from a 1950s actress, Aquanetta Rose; Rose came to a Phoenix show by the group in 1990.
The Aquanettas toured nationally and managed to secure a record deal with Canadian record label Nettwerk Productions who also distributed their recordings through IRS Records in the United States. They recorded one album, two EPs and three singles before breaking up in 1995.
All four band members contributed to the songwriting, collaborating with outside writers to craft a sound influenced by the Rolling Stones and the Velvet Underground. The album features a mix of acid-etched melodies, reverberant guitars, and monotone vocals, creating a unique musical experience. Notably, the track ‘Pictures of Italy’ serves as an ode to pasta, adding a playful touch to the album’s thematic diversity.
Love with the Proper Stranger received favorable reviews from critics. Trouser Press highlighted singer/guitarist Deborah Schwartz’s powerful voice, reminiscent of West Coast ’60s folk-rockers like the Mamas and the Papas, and praised drummer Stephanie Seymour’s high harmonies for enhancing the overall effect. The Washington Post noted that while the band wasn’t significantly retooling garage-rock, they were effectively keeping the genre vibrant. The New York Times described the music as ‘classic, basic rock-and-roll,’ emphasizing its rugged guitar riffs and lyrics about the more bothersome aspects of romance.
The album remains a testament to The Aquanettas’ ability to blend classic rock influences with their unique style, offering a fresh take on traditional rock themes. Their work continues to be appreciated by fans of the genre, standing as a notable entry in the early ’90s rock scene.
