The Black Keys – Ohio Players – Vinyl Record
Ohio Players finds The Black Keys treating collaboration as a source of fresh momentum. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney remain the center of the record, but Beck, Noel Gallagher, Greg Kurstin and several other guests enter the writing and recording process without overwhelming the duo’s identity. The result is a lively 2024 album that moves beyond a strict guitar-and-drums framework while retaining the economical riffs, dry humor and deep interest in older American music that have always defined the band.
“This Is Nowhere” opens with a loose, dusty groove before “Don’t Let Me Go” adds a brighter rhythmic snap. “Beautiful People (Stay High),” co-written with Beck, supplies the album’s most immediate communal chorus, while “On the Game” brings Noel Gallagher into a slower, reflective piece. That sequence shows the record’s range early: garage rock, soul, glam color and pop craft sit together naturally because Auerbach’s voice and Carney’s direct drumming provide a consistent frame.
The first side closes with “Only Love Matters,” “Candy and Her Friends” and a compact reading of William Bell’s “I Forgot to Be Your Lover.” Rather than treating the cover as a museum piece, the band folds its patient soul melody into the same contemporary production as the originals. Lil Noid’s appearance on “Candy and Her Friends” is similarly integrated, adding a different Memphis lineage to a record already built from shared musical language.
Side two keeps the pace varied. “Please Me (Till I’m Satisfied)” and “You’ll Pay” lean into tough, concise rock-and-roll, while “Paper Crown” uses Beck and Juicy J to create an unusually layered meeting of blues-rock and hip-hop sensibilities. “Live Till I Die,” “Read Em and Weep” and “Fever Tree” move through swagger, tension and melody before “Every Time You Leave” closes the album on a more wistful note.
This Nonesuch and Easy Eye Sound vinyl edition presents the complete fourteen-song album in its original sequence and includes a foldout poster. The pressing uses the standard catalog number 075597906196 and is the appropriate choice for listeners who want the core album rather than a later expanded edition. The colorful package and collaborative credits make it a particularly readable physical document of a band deliberately opening its studio door.
