Released on September 17, 1980, One Step Closer marked the ninth studio album by The Doobie Brothers and the last to feature lead vocalist Michael McDonald before the band’s temporary breakup in 1982. Coming off the success of their Grammy-winning 1978 album Minute by Minute, which leaned heavily into blue-eyed soul and soft rock, One Step Closer continued in a similar vein but was met with a more lukewarm reception, both critically and commercially. Despite this, the album still produced several hit singles and remains an important entry in the band’s evolution.
One Step Closer is heavily influenced by soul, R&B, and jazz, further distancing the band from their earlier rock and boogie-infused sound of the Tom Johnston era. The production is smooth and polished, with a greater emphasis on keyboard-driven melodies, horn sections, and layered harmonies. The band was also dealing with internal tensions, and after the supporting tour, founding members Patrick Simmons and John Hartman left the group, leading to the Doobie Brothers’ first breakup in 1982.
