The Human League – Crash – Vinyl Record
Released on September 8, 1986, Crash is the fifth studio album by The Human League, marking a significant shift in the band’s sound as they embraced a more polished, R&B-influenced approach. Unlike their earlier records, which were characterized by synth-heavy, futuristic new wave and electro-pop, Crash saw The Human League working with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the legendary duo behind Janet Jackson’s Control (1986). This collaboration resulted in a sleeker, dance-oriented sound, blending synth-pop with Minneapolis funk and contemporary R&B production.
The album’s biggest success came with “Human,” a lush, emotional ballad that became The Human League’s second U.S. No. 1 hit, following “Don’t You Want Me” (1981). With its smooth harmonies, layered synthesizers, and heartfelt lyrics about infidelity and forgiveness, the song perfectly encapsulated the Jam & Lewis production style while still feeling distinctly Human League. Other standout tracks include “I Need Your Loving,” a funky, Prince-inspired dance track, and “Love Is All That Matters,” a soulful, mid-tempo number that later gained popularity as a single in 1988. Songs like “Are You Ever Coming Back?” and “Party” showcase a more rhythm-driven, groove-heavy approach than the band’s earlier work, reflecting their shift toward an R&B-influenced sound.
Despite the success of Crash in the U.S., particularly with “Human,” the album was polarizing among longtime fans and critics. Many felt that the collaboration with Jam & Lewis stripped away some of the band’s original synth-pop identity, making it feel more like a production-driven project rather than a true Human League album. However, others appreciated its danceable, sophisticated sound and saw it as a natural evolution for the band in the mid-’80s.
Over the years, Crash has been re-evaluated as a fascinating, if divisive, chapter in The Human League’s discography. While it may not have had the same cultural impact as Dare (1981), it remains an important record that highlights how the band was willing to experiment with new styles and adapt to changing musical landscapes.
