This Mortal Coil – Blood – Gatefold Double Vinyl Records

Blood is the third and final studio album by This Mortal Coil, a musical project led by Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of the influential British record label 4AD. Released in 1991, Blood continues the tradition of the project’s previous works, blending ethereal soundscapes, gothic atmospheres, and a diverse array of guest musicians from the 4AD roster. The album is a culmination of the collective’s exploration of dream pop, darkwave, and ambient music.

Blood is known for its haunting beauty and intricate arrangements, featuring a mixture of original compositions and cover songs, reinterpreted in This Mortal Coil’s distinctive style. The album maintains the ethereal and atmospheric qualities that defined their earlier releases, ‘It’ll End in Tears’ and ‘Filigree & Shadow,’ but also introduces new sonic textures and a deeper emotional resonance.

The album is characterized by its lush, atmospheric arrangements, blending dream pop, ambient, and gothic influences. Features a variety of guest vocalists, each bringing their unique style and emotional depth to the songs. The album includes both original compositions and reinterpretations of songs by artists such as Gene Clark, Chris Bell, and Syd Barrett, all infused with This Mortal Coil’s distinctive sound. The use of orchestral instruments, layered vocals, and ambient sound textures creates a rich, immersive listening experience.

Blood was well-received by critics and fans alike, praised for its beautiful arrangements, emotional depth, and the cohesive vision that ties together the diverse range of songs. It is considered a fitting conclusion to This Mortal Coil’s trilogy of albums, cementing the project’s legacy as a pioneering force in the ethereal and dream pop genres.
