Wire – Peel Sessions – Cassette

Peel Sessions by Wire is a compilation of recordings from the band’s sessions with BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel. These sessions were recorded between 1978 and 2002 and were broadcast on Peel’s radio show. The release captures the essence of Wire’s evolving sound over the years.

DJ John Peel became one of the most influential men in the British music scene with this almost unerring ability to pick the ‘next big thing.’ His radio show airs specially recorded live-in-the-studio sessions, usually of four songs, by whatever band he favors that week. Often, artists use this opportunity to promote current singles and occasionally perform covers. Wire, on the other hand, for the most part used its Peel Sessions to demo new material, some of which never appeared on the band’s studio albums.

The first session was recorded in January of 1978, and includes a faster version of PINK FLAG’s ‘106 Beats That,’ two tracks from the subsequent CHAIRS MISSING, and ‘Culture Vulture,’ a track unique to the session. The second set of four, recorded in early September of 1978, features alternate versions of songs that would subsequently appear on 154. Probably of most interest to Wire fans was the band’s third Peel Session. Recorded on September 11, 1979, the third session produced just one track, the freaky (and lengthy!) soundscape ‘Crazy About Love,’ which had evolved from of various rehearsal jams over the preceding year. Perhaps not the best place to begin learning about Wire, but essential for fans.

The compilation includes tracks recorded during various sessions with John Peel, showcasing different periods in Wire’s career. The sessions span a considerable period, from 1978 to 2002, offering a retrospective look at the band’s development.

John Peel was a highly influential DJ known for supporting and promoting emerging and established artists. His sessions were coveted opportunities for bands to showcase their music on the BBC.

The Peel Sessions provide insight into how Wire’s sound evolved over the years, reflecting changes in musical trends and the band’s own artistic development. The compilation features a selection of tracks from each session, creating a diverse and comprehensive collection.
