KMFDM – Money Bargeld – Cassette

KMFDM (originally standing for ‘Kein Mehrheit Für Die Mitleid,’ which translates to ‘No Pity for the Majority’ in English) is a German industrial rock band known for their powerful and aggressive sound, blending elements of industrial, metal, and electronic music.

Like Ministry, KMFDM has attracted listeners who aren’t necessarily big fans of industrial music. Abrasive, noisy and dissonant, Money hardly qualifies as easy listening. But compare this excellent Cassette to albums by Skinny Puppy and the seminal Throbbing Gristle, and you’ll begin to see why Money was considered to be much more accessible by comparison.

Their music features hard-hitting beats, distorted guitars, synthesizers, and politically charged lyrics. They have a dedicated fan base and have influenced many artists in the industrial rock and alternative music scenes.

The aggression of industrial noise is there, but so are elements of heavy metal, Euro-dance music and hip-hop. And the overall results are as infectious as they are unpredictable. Club DJs found songs like ‘Money,’ ‘Bargeld’ and ‘Sex on the Flag’ hard to resist, as did the many dancers who discovered that a blistering metal guitar, distorted industrial vocals, and a syncopated dance beat could indeed be united into a cohesive, exciting whole.
