The Only Place also introduces subtle stylistic influences that weren’t as prominent before. Elements of country-influenced guitar, classic pop melodies, and even hints of folk rock appear throughout the album. These influences give the record a warmer, more open sound compared with the dense fuzz of their earlier work. While the band still retains its indie rock identity, the album shows a willingness to expand beyond the garage-rock framework that initially defined them.
When the album was released, critical reactions were somewhat mixed. Some reviewers appreciated the band’s attempt to grow artistically and praised the stronger songwriting and improved production quality. Others felt that the cleaner sound removed some of the scrappy charm that made Crazy for You so appealing.
