Description
Anthony Williams – Life Time – 180 Gram Tone Poet Vinyl Record
Life Time was Anthony Williams’ first album as a leader, recorded for Blue Note when the drummer was still nineteen. Instead of using the date to display speed or volume, Williams designed a set of compositions that treat rhythm, silence, and instrumental color as equal structural elements.
The two-part “Two Pieces of One” features tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers with bassists Gary Peacock and Richard Davis. “Red” and “Green” avoid a conventional piano-led harmony, allowing the ensemble to shift direction through rhythmic cues, bass interaction, and Rivers’s exploratory lines.
“Tomorrow Afternoon” brings Herbie Hancock’s piano into the session, but the music remains spacious and unpredictable. Williams’s drumming can be delicate one moment and sharply disruptive the next, constantly changing how the listener hears the written material.
“Memory” adds Bobby Hutcherson’s vibraphone to Hancock, Rivers, Williams, and both bassists, creating the album’s most unusual texture. The brief “Barb’s Song to the Wizard” closes with a more concentrated lyrical idea, proving that the session’s experimental language could also be concise.
This Tone Poet edition presents the complete original album on 180-gram vinyl, mastered by Kevin Gray from the analog tapes and packaged in a deluxe gatefold jacket. It preserves a startling debut that already shows Williams thinking as a composer and ensemble architect.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
