Jimmy Smith – Prayer Meetin’ – 180 Gram Tone Poet Vinyl Record
Prayer Meetin’ brings Jimmy Smith and Stanley Turrentine together in a compact quartet built around blues, gospel, and deep swing. Recorded in February 1963, the session adds guitarist Quentin Warren and drummer Donald Bailey, leaving plenty of open space for Smith’s Hammond organ bass lines and Turrentine’s broad tenor sound.
The title track begins with a church-inflected call and response, but the performance develops into more than a familiar soul-jazz groove. Smith controls the dynamics from the organ, moving between clipped chords, walking bass, and bright upper-register runs while Turrentine answers in a vocal, patiently paced style.
“I Almost Lost My Mind” slows the pulse and lets melody carry the emotion. “Stone Cold Dead in the Market” has a lighter, more playful character, with Warren’s guitar helping to keep the texture transparent. Bailey’s drumming supplies lift without crowding the organ.
The second side includes “When the Saints Go Marching In,” transformed through the quartet’s blues language, and the jazz standard “Red Top.” Smith’s “Picnickin’” closes the album with a relaxed original that feels informal but remains carefully shaped.
This Tone Poet edition presents the complete six-track session on 180-gram vinyl, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog tapes and housed in a deluxe gatefold jacket. It is a warm, accessible example of Smith and Turrentine’s natural musical chemistry.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
