Blondie – Yuletide Throwdown – Hot Pink Vinyl Record

“Yuletide Throwdown” captures a playful moment when downtown New York punk, hip-hop and pop culture were crossing paths with very few rules. Debbie Harry and Fab 5 Freddy trade holiday rhymes over music by Chris Stein, turning a Christmas record into an affectionate early-rap experiment. Recorded in 1981 and originally circulated as a flexi-disc, the track reflects Blondie’s genuine engagement with the emerging hip-hop scene rather than a distant novelty treatment.

The central performance is conversational and loose. Harry and Freddy exchange boasts, seasonal references and jokes while the beat leaves plenty of open space around their voices. Stein’s backing favors rhythm over a conventional rock arrangement, connecting the record to the same curiosity that produced “Rapture.” Its appeal lies in that informal quality: established musicians and a pioneering visual artist sound like friends trying a new form because the energy around it is irresistible.

For this release, Cut Chemist reshapes the archival recording with a fuller low end, crisp breaks and an editor’s respect for the original personalities. The main remix extends the idea into a dance-floor-ready 12-inch track without polishing away its handmade charm. Small vocal fragments become rhythmic events, and the call-and-response structure gains a new sense of forward motion.

The reverse side provides both a concise radio edit of the Cut Chemist remix and the 1981 original recording. That pairing makes the single more than a colored-vinyl curiosity. Listeners can hear the source in its period context, compare the changes made for the contemporary remix, or program the shorter version when the extended cut is not needed. All three selections preserve the odd, cheerful collision at the heart of the song.

Issued by Capitol, UMC and Numero Group in 2021, this 45 RPM 12-inch is pressed on vivid hot pink vinyl. It carries catalog numbers 5394536 and NUM1266 and presents the material in a full-size jacket rather than its original disposable flexi format. For Blondie collectors, early hip-hop listeners and anyone building a holiday set beyond familiar standards, it is a distinctive and genuinely historical seasonal record.

Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
