Instead, the record moves unpredictably, shifting between heaviness, atmosphere, and outright experimentation in ways that feel intentional, even confrontational toward longtime expectations.
The biggest change is in structure. Songs don’t always build toward explosive payoffs; some just sit in tension, others pivot halfway through into something completely different. There’s a willingness to let tracks feel uncomfortable or unresolved. That unpredictability becomes the album’s defining trait—it keeps you off balance, but also means not every moment lands with the same force.
Corey Taylor’s performance mirrors that shift. He still has the ability to go full intensity, but here he spends more time exploring range—clean vocals, layered harmonies, and more controlled phrasing. When the aggression does come in, it feels more targeted than constant. It’s less about overwhelming the listener and more about choosing when to hit.
The band opens things up. There are industrial textures, melodic passages, and even moments that lean toward alternative or experimental rock. The percussion is still intricate, the guitars still heavy, but they’re used more selectively. Space becomes part of the sound, which is a big departure from the dense, wall-of-noise approach of earlier records.
What’s interesting is the tone—it’s not chaotic in the same way their early work was. It’s more calculated, almost clinical at times. That can make the album feel less visceral, but also more layered. It’s a different kind of intensity—less immediate, more controlled.
The title fits. The End, So Far doesn’t feel like a conclusion—it feels like a turning point. A band reassessing what they are and what they want to sound like moving forward, even if that means alienating some expectations. Less about raw force, more about disruption. It’s Slipknot challenging their own identity—uneven at times, but intentionally so.
