Released in 2022, Stumpwork finds Dry Cleaning pushing their distinctive post-punk style into stranger, more adventurous territory. The London band had already gained attention for their unusual approach to songwriting—combining sharp, angular instrumentation with the spoken-word delivery of vocalist Florence Shaw—and this second album expands that formula in surprising ways.
Rather than simply repeating the sound of their debut, Stumpwork widens the band’s palette. The guitars from Tom Dowse remain jagged and rhythmic, but the arrangements often introduce new textures, from warped electronic sounds to layered studio effects that give the record a slightly surreal atmosphere. The rhythm section, driven by Lewis Maynard on bass and Nick Buxton on drums, continues to provide tight, hypnotic grooves that anchor the more experimental elements.
Florence Shaw’s vocal style remains one of the band’s defining characteristics.
