Hank Mobley – A Caddy for Daddy – 180 Gram Tone Poet Vinyl Record
A Caddy for Daddy reunites Hank Mobley with a three-horn front line and a rhythm section built for both power and detail. Recorded in December 1965, the session features Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums.
The title composition opens with a soulful vamp before the ensemble states Mobley’s compact theme. His tenor solo is measured and melodic, Morgan answers with brighter projection, and Fuller gives the arrangement a broad middle register. Tyner’s voicings add weight without crowding the horns.
“The Morning After” shifts into a more flowing line, while “Venus Di Mildew” uses humor in its title but serious rhythmic design in the performance. Mobley’s writing consistently gives the soloists a clear character to work from rather than treating the head as a brief formality.
“Ace Deuce Trey” brings blues language to the foreground, and “3rd Time Around” closes with a long, confidently paced performance. Cranshaw and Higgins maintain a supple foundation, allowing the three horns to sound full without making the music feel heavy.
This Tone Poet edition presents the original five-track album on 180-gram vinyl, mastered by Kevin Gray from the analog tapes and packaged in a deluxe gatefold jacket. It gives one of Mobley’s strongest mid-1960s ensembles an appropriately spacious, premium presentation.
Brand new, never played and still sealed in the factory plastic
