Henry Lee Summer, born Henry Lee Swartz on July 5, 1955, in Brazil, Indiana, is an American rock singer and musician known for his energetic performances and blend of pop and rock music. He began his musical journey as a singer and drummer before teaching himself guitar and keyboards. Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, Summer toured extensively across the American Midwest and South, building a dedicated fan base.
In 1987, Summer signed with Epic Records, leading to the release of several successful albums during the late 1980s and early 1990s. His self-titled album, Henry Lee Summer, released in 1988, featured the hit single I Wish I Had a Girl, which reached No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock chart and No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Another notable track, Hey Baby, from his 1989 album I’ve Got Everything, peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Summer’s dynamic stage presence led him to tour with prominent acts such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eddie Money, The Doobie Brothers, Chicago, Don Henley, Robert Palmer, and Cheap Trick. He also performed at Farm Aid 4 in 1990 alongside artists like Elton John and Guns N’ Roses.
Despite facing personal challenges, including legal issues in the mid-2000s, Summer has continued to perform and maintain a presence in the music scene. He was inducted into the Wabash Valley Musicians Hall of Fame in 2014, recognizing his contributions to music.
