Skin Chamber – Wound – Cassette

Wound is the debut album by Skin Chamber, an industrial metal project formed by former members of the influential noise rock band Controlled Bleeding. Released in 1991 on Roadrunner Records, “Wound” is a dark, heavy, and abrasive album that blends elements of industrial music, metal, and noise.

Wound is characterized by its harsh soundscapes, combining heavy guitar riffs, distorted vocals, and industrial noise elements. The music is intense and aggressive, often exploring dark and unsettling themes. The album creates an oppressive atmosphere through its use of dissonance, metallic percussion, and layers of feedback and distortion.

A ruthlessly heavy fusion of industrial noise and thrash metal, Wound was one of the strongest alternative rock cassettes of 1991. Skin Chamber, a duo with a very dark, morbid outlook, wasn’t very well known, but its two members had solid credentials. Having been members of the underground unit Controlled Bleeding, guitarist/vocalist Paul Lemos and drummer/vocalist Chris Moriarty were quite proficient when it came to the art of musical brutality. Unapologetically abrasive and dissonant, “Mind Grinder,” “The Nails of Faith” and “In the Sewer of Dreams” demonstrated that metal’s guitar-powered aggression and industrial’s high-tech assault could be a most potent combination.

Key Tracks:

“Skin Me” – This track sets the tone for the album with its brutal riffs, pounding rhythms, and tortured vocals, encapsulating the raw intensity of Skin Chamber’s sound.
“Sucked Inside” – Known for its grinding guitars and relentless pace, this song highlights the industrial metal fusion that defines the album.
“Slice of God” – A track that combines unsettling samples with heavy, doom-laden riffs, creating a dark and immersive listening experience.
“Wound” – The title track features a mix of slow, crushing riffs and eerie industrial sounds, capturing the album\’s haunting and abrasive aesthetic.

Wound received attention within the underground metal and industrial scenes for its uncompromising approach and the way it pushed the boundaries of both genres. While it may not have achieved mainstream success, the album is appreciated by fans for its raw power and experimental nature.

Skin Chamber, though not as well-known as some contemporaries, has a cult following among fans of extreme music. Wound stands out as a significant release in the early 90s industrial metal scene, representing a bold fusion of styles that was ahead of its time.

For listeners interested in the more extreme and experimental edges of industrial metal, Wound by Skin Chamber is a noteworthy album. Its blend of aggression, atmosphere, and sonic experimentation makes it a unique and compelling listen.
