Description
Roosevelt Booba Barnes – Heartbroken Man – Compact Disc
Roosevelt ‘Booba’ Barnes was an American blues musician known for his soulful guitar playing and distinctive vocal style. He was born on October 22, 1936, in Longwood, Mississippi, and began playing guitar at a young age. Barnes primarily played in the North Mississippi Hill Country blues style, which is characterized by its hypnotic rhythms and raw, emotive sound.
Roosevelt ‘Booba’ Barnes made only one full-length record in his life, The Heartbroken Man, but the harmonica and guitar player was a legend in the Mississippi Delta long before anyone heard the album.
Known for his outrageous onstage persona, Barnes was brought up in the blues clubs and bars of Greenville, Mississippi, by blues legend Howlin’ Wolf, and made no bones about imitating him.
Barnes gained recognition in the 1990s when he collaborated with the blues musician Junior Kimbrough, performing at Kimbrough’s juke joint in Chulahoma, Mississippi. He became an integral part of the local blues scene and earned a reputation as a talented and respected musician.
Despite his talent, Roosevelt ‘Booba’ Barnes remained relatively unknown outside of the blues community during his lifetime. However, his music received more exposure after his death in 1996. His recordings were released posthumously on various compilations, and his contributions to the North Mississippi blues tradition have been acknowledged by fans of the genre.
Roosevelt ‘Booba’ Barnes is remembered as a passionate and authentic blues artist, contributing to the rich musical heritage of Mississippi and leaving a lasting impact on the blues scene.
However, he was praised on his own merits as ‘one of the toughest postwar bluesmen’ of the Delta.
